It was on a trip to northeastern region of Brazil that the “paulista” Celia Zveibil Brandão was hooked by the art of making pottery. She traveled through many places and many cities during the 70’s and landed in a small village on the banks of the Rio São Francisco where people make a living with this type of activity. Celia remembers with emotion a large shed where all moulded and worked with clay. The unforgettable scene delighted her eyes and her heart. Since then, Celia has been devoted to creating her own ceramic pieces and is now recognized with award-winning work in Brazil and abroad.

Celia has a degree in Visual Communication (Graphic Design) by the prestigious Mackenzie University of São Paulo. In the early 90's, along with her husband and two children, she came to live in Canada. Since then, the artist has been constantly seeking to improve and to teach the art of creating and producing functional and decorative objects in ceramics and porcelain. Member of various institutions related to the area, such as FUSION (The Ontario Clay and Glass Association) and the Gardiner Museum, among others, Celia is fully integrated in the Canadian style of art and exhibitions, and this has facilitated her participation in this market.

It is in a nice studio on Clinton Avenue, close to bars and Italian restaurants that Celia feels free to experiment with colors, shapes and create new materials and different designs. Beauty and creativity are key ingredients to her success, which earned her two prestigious awards in recent years: Design on Fireworks 2003, with the piece "Brazilian Expresso Set", and Best Design in 2000, at the Biennial Juried Exhibition - Toronto Potters, with the piece "Tea Pot".

But Celia did not stop there. Parallel to her production for galleries, shops and shows, since 1995 she also teaches at art workshops for children. Classes are held at the Ceramics Studio, Miles Nadal Jewish Community Centre, located on Bloor St. West, close to the University of Toronto. "I feel fortunate to be part of a large community of ceramists such as the one I found in Canada!" says the artist.

In the Fall, Celia will be participating in two major events: the Fusion Pottery and Glass Sale in October and the Toronto Potters in November. An excellent opportunity to see the beautiful works of the Brazilian ceramist who conquered the world of pottery.
